  treatment OVERVIEW

After a visit from a qualified equine dental technician the treated horse's mouth should:

  • be free from sharp enamel points
  • have a well balanced occlusal surface - with correct angle
  • be comfortable/pain free

Typical Treatments
The majority of treatments consist of filing, reshaping, cleaning, and sometimes extracting teeth. Obviously the treatment is entirely dependant upon the individual horse's requirements.

Many treatments are simply to maintain the horse's good dental health so no difficult procedures are performed. In all cases, the horse's mouth is washed with disinfectant before and after the treatment. Complete dental records are kept for every horse treated.

Sedation
Occasionally horses will need to be sedated to carryout procedures. This depends upon the difficulty of the treatment required and also the reaction/behaviour of the horse.

Check-ups
Basic dental care check-ups are carried out on all horses, which include Lateral Jaw Excursion, and ageing. The horses age can be determined by the stage of development of the teeth. Bit Seats are also a common procedure to be carried out.
