JAW EXCURSION

BIT SEATS

DIASTEMA

  jaw excursion

As part of the basic dental treatment the animals lateral jaw excursion will be checked. This is basically the lateral movement of the animal's jaws when the mouth is closed.

Due to the natural angle of horses' teeth (10 - 15 degrees), the bottom jaw should be able to move from side-to-side, when the mouth is closed and the upper jaw is held still. When the horse's incisors (front teeth) are held together, the bottom jaw should be able to move from between 1 - 1.5 incisors to the left and right. This should always be maintained.
