The wolf tooth, in domesticated horses, is a small residual tooth which is usually located in the top jaw directly in front of the first pre molar. Wolf teeth can come in all shapes and sizes.
In the majority of horses the wolf tooth causes no problems at all and there is therefore no reason for it to be removed. Sometimes, however, the wolf tooth grows more towards the front of the mouth, slightly in the direction of the tongue. In this case it can come in contact with the bit and in turn impair the control of the rider.
Wolf teeth can be extracted under sedation and veterinary supervision.
